J-1 Internship Program

Oklahoma State University offers a unique internship to international students pursuing a career in food service and management, hospitality or tourism. Students at partnering universities and programs have the opportunity to travel to the United States for an immersive, hands-on experience.

Under the program, you will be offered a minimum of 32 hours per week in an internship with University Dining Services (UDS). You’ll have the chance to learn either front-of-house or back-of-house operations in a large-scale dining environment. With over 32 individual dining concepts, you will rotate between different concepts, giving you a well-rounded internship experience not found elsewhere. Additionally, catering experience for both large and small events is available to the majority of interns.

All interns will be offered an official, internationally-recognized ServeSafe course and certification as part of the program. You will have the chance to prepare meals with top-of-the-line equipment in modern kitchens that are superior to industry standards.

As part of the internship, you will live on-campus, right in the center of all the action. You can immerse yourself in a diverse, university community that’s rich with intercultural experiences. Accommodation is provided at no cost as part of the program, along with a meal credit for each shift worked and $7.50 per hour wage. Additionally, a 50 cent per hour bonus for all hours worked during the semester is available to interns with a 100% attendance record at the end of the semester.

Each internship lasts one American academic semester. At the end, participants will return to their country of origin with enhanced skills, certifications and a diverse perspective, ready to enter the work force.

Direct flights to Stillwater are available with more than 190 connections WORLDWIDE via American Airlines. Upon arrival, your program liaison will transport you and your belongings to campus.

In addition to work experience, you’ll have the opportunity to explore America’s Heartland. Oklahoma is located in the middle of the legendary U.S. Route 66, which is full of iconic and historic landmarks. If you’re craving a big-city excursion, Oklahoma City and Tulsa are just an hour away from campus.

  • Daily meal credit in addition to your wage
